My First Instant Pot Recipe - Lokey Chana Dal (Calabash with split peas)

I just got my new Instant Pot about 2 weeks ago and I am hooked!  It is such a versatile kitchen appliance and reduces the amount of dish washing.  So here is my first Instant Pot recipe...

Gather all of the ingredients first:

Split peas or chana dal - 1 cup (soaked overnight in water)

Green chillies (3) & Ginger (2 tbsp) crushed in mortar & pestle or a blender...

Peel and chop 1 Calabash as shown in the photo below.  Calabash is also known as lokey at the Indian stores.

Other ingredients to set aside - cumin seeds (1 tbsp), Dried red chillies (2 cut into halves), 1 tsp of Deggi mirch or kashmiri chilli powder, 1 to 1 1/2 cups of water and 2 tsp of salt.

Turn your Instant Pot on. Choose saute mode on high and add 4 or 5 tbsp of oil...you may use coconut or canola oil.

Add cumin seeds. Once the cumin seeds start spluttering add dried red chillies.  Now add the crushed green chillies and ginger.  Add Deggi mirch or kashmiri chilli powder. the soaked split peas (drain the water & then add the split peas) and chopped lokey.  Add water and salt.  Mix well and close the lid.  Choose cancel button to stop the saute mode and then choose pressure cook with normal mode.  Set the time to 5 minutes.  Turn the steam release handle to "seal".  Now you can just walk away or just chill out...

It takes about 30 minutes for the pressure to drop.  In the meanwhile chop 2 sprigs of cilantro, set aside 1 1/2 tsp of garam masala or curry powder if that is what you have, 2 tsp of mango powder also known as amchur, 1 tsp of turmeric powder and 3 to 4 cloves of garlic.  You may crush the garlic in mortar & pestle or use the garlic press.

Once the pressure drops turn the steam release handle to vent.  Open the Instant Pot lid and add all of the above mentioned ingredients - cilantro, garam masala, mango powder, turmeric powder and garlic.  Mix well.  If it is too watery for you just turn on the saute mode at high and let it simmer for 3 to 4 minutes or so...Now the dal is ready to serve. You can eat this with rice or any flat bread.

While storing the instant pot after use and clean up make sure to invert the lid and place it over the instant pot. Do not shut the instant pot tight while storing.  If you do so it will start smelling after a while.
